With a length of 30 km and an average width of 3.5 km, the
island of Terschelling boasts a quite varied landscape. On the north coast
there is a 30 km long beach, sometimes as much as 1 km wide! Beyond this
beach there is a very broad strip of dune. First there are the newer dunes,
those with still immature vegetation; behind them the inner dunes show
a much more luxurious plant growth. A part of the old dune area was planted
with trees at the beginning of the century; this area is now a forest.
West Terschelling, which is reached by a ferry, is the largest
of the island's villages. Here, as in Midsland, one can admire the typical
facades of the old Commodores' dwellings dating from the heyday of commerce
and whaling. visit musea
The influence of the sea and the warm gulf stream waters
coming from it is evident year 'round in Terschelling. The winters are
rather mild but the summers are generally cooler than they are on the mainland.
The nearly constant wind makes rainy spells pass quickly and allows more
sunshine And because sea water cools quite slowly, autumn is blessed
by relatively high temperatures.
